Fashion entrepreneur, Selina Bebaako-Mensah has revealed that she wants to be Africa’s Oprah Winfrey.

Miss Mensah stated that she pursued her dream of working in the media because she was inspired by Oprah Winfrey, an America media personality.

According to her, she really looked up to Oprah and had hopes of becoming like her.

Chatting with Asieduwaa Akumia on Prime Morning, the creative director said though she finds herself currently living a different dream, she may pursue her dream of becoming the African Oprah Winfrey some day.

“I’m inspired a lot by Oprah Winfrey and her journey and her success that she’s seen in the media. I went into the media because of Oprah. I wanted to be the African Oprah Winfrey. It’s not worked out yet, but maybe one day it will workout,” she said.

According to her, she trained as a broadcast journalist and was privileged to work with a few media houses but did not feel fulfilled. She then discovered that the love and passion for fashion she had nurtured since infancy could become a big time career and decided to pursue that.

The fashion entrepreneur recounted how she started from scratch and how, though she faced challenges, she strived and worked hard to finally bring her dream into reality.

“I didn’t even have a shop for one year… The workshop is in pig farm so I was producing there and selling from my car boot for a year. I was working on the radio, and after my radio show, I quickly ran off to meet clients, go to people’s offices, houses, and use Facebook to market my products. So I started very small,” she said.

Madam Mensah narrated how difficult the journey to success has been. She explained that people who don’t know her story, think that everything was handed to her on a silver platter.

“You see the company is big now, I have a big shop in Osu, winning awards and featuring on international platforms; it wasn’t easy. I built up. I didn’t just start and straight away, I was up there. That is what people think. They see the glory now, and they don’t know the story, so they think you had it easy,” she said.

She worked her way up the ladder and is currently the creative director and founder of the African fashion accessory brand “Selina Beb”. She has also won awards both locally and internationally and has had the privilege to work with and collaborate with other amazing fashion designers in Ghana and around the world.
