A Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has commended the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the measures it put in place to make the voting process in the 2020 election swift and one without strain.

He observed that despite the pockets of violence and irregularities that were recorded, the 2020 election was largely event-free, with voters spending few minutes to cast their ballots.

"But the point must also be made that they could not maintain the needed relational competence that they had to build with all the political actors. And so, they went into the processes with some people not too clear, particularly the opposition still raising eyebrows and all that."

"It makes it difficult for me to admit that this was the most fabulous election that was held. My take will be to score them 51%," he told Benjamin Akakpo on Prime Morning, on Tuesday.

Prof Gyampo added: "I would tell you that things went well but there were challenges. The fact that the EC itself was not able to mount the witness box to be cross-examined about some of these challenges [at the Supreme Court hearing] takes some shine out of the process."

Meanwhile, he said the EC should refrain from accepting external assessments of the elections as the only means of determining the legitimacy of the process.

"I think it is bogus. We are growing and so the legitimacy and credibility of our processes must first of all be assessed or determined by ourselves. Why do we sit here and always say that we did well because the EU said so?"

"We have the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), which has observed elections from 1992 up till now. We have other civil society organisations and academics who also go to the grassroots to do some of these observations and provide scientific evidence-based reports," he stated.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, October 25, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, in charge of General Services, Dr Bossman Asare said election observers, both local and international, also praised the EC and described the elections as transparent, credible and highly successful.

“It is not a wonder that the internationally recognized EU International Observer Mission, which has a track record of elections observation, scored the 2020 elections 95%,” he said.
