The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern warning to politicians to resist any attempts to assault journalists in the upcoming polls.
The President of the association, Albert Dwumfuor, vowed that the media would retaliate against any such attempts on members of the media.
“Let me take the opportunity to caution politicians, a group of persons who have the tendency of attacking journalists that in this election if you don’t have the temperament or commitment to accommodate journalists, you stay away because if you come to us with hostility, we will come to you with hostility,” he warned.
The GJA president also charged journalists to commit to playing their role in maintaining the nation's peace.
Mr Dwumfuor emphasised that elections are crucial moments for the country and that journalists must be dedicated to fulfilling their responsibilities during such times.
“Ghana is the only country we have, we can’t afford to lose the peace that we are currently enjoying so the media must guard the peace jealously. Also, the political parties, religious leaders and CSOs must all be involved in crossing the hurdle of peace.
“I always say that one of our key roles is to protect the institution of the state. This year, we are going to be seen as protecting the institution of the state,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Dwumfour said his outfit has already started sanctioning members who violate ethical standards.
