The Inspector General of Police Patrick IK Acheampong has ordered an immediate investigation into an anonymous tape recording implicating top government officials in a plot to rig Sunday’s election run-off.
The tape, excerpts of which was aired on News File, Joy FM’s current affairs programme on Saturday, has a voice purported to be that of Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Deputy Local Government Minister, contracting a man with an amount of 60 million cedis to steal ballot boxes on the day of the run-off.
Chairman of the NPP campaign, Mr. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and Hackman Owusu Agyemang former cabinet minister were alleged to be part of the meeting, but their voices were not heard on the tape.
At a press conference in Accra on Saturday, the IGP instructed the Director of Criminal and Investigations Department (CID) to investigate the matter with dispatch.
He dismissed allegations that the police were part of this grand plot to rig the polls as suggested in the tape.
The purported voice of Maxwell Kofi Jumah was heard reassuring the assailant that the IGP and all regional police commanders are aware of the plot.
The IGP gave the assurance that the police will hunt those who foment trouble in Sunday’s run-off.
Meanwhile the men at the centre of the accusation have all vehemently denied there was any such meeting.
Mr. Jumah told Akwasi Sarpong host of News File, the voice could not have been his, insisting it was dotted with an Ewe accent.
He argues he has never in his life been to Jake Obetsebi Lamptey’s residence, the venue for the alleged meeting.
On the day of the said meeting, Mr. Jumah claimed he was in Kumasi and could not have been in Accra as alleged.
Mr. Jumah’s defence was corroborated by Mr. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and
Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyemang.
They insist the anonymous tape was a malicious fabrication to injure their reputation and to create disaffection for the ruling government.
