Highlife artiste and self-acclaimed Africa's number 1 Rockstar Kuami Eugene says he isn't perturbed by criticisms against his winning of the 'Artiste of the Year' award at the just ended Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).
He believes everyone has the right to their opinions and should be allowed to express them.
"This is Ghana and we actually live in a country where people are extremely validated. Our level of validation is crazy and we are opinionated as well, people want to express themselves, they always want you to understand that they have opinions so that is when you need to give room to express themselves," he said.
At the event he also received an award for the 'Highlife Artiste of the Year', however, there have been suggestions by some members of the public that he didn't deserve that award either.
Reacting to the criticisms, Kuami Eugene said he remained unperturbed by them.
He said that he was certain that if any other artiste, other than himself, had picked up the award, he or she would also have received some level of backlash.
"[If] it was Sarkodie that took it home or Kofi Kinaata or Medikal, you will still have people to say that 'I don't think they deserve it, they should have given it to Kuami Eugene, the young guy. So people will always be opinionated all the time," he said.
According to Kuami Eugene, everyone in that category is a winner and deserves to win.
"I believe every single person in that category actually worked hard. And as soon as you find yourself in that category, to me, I feel you are a winner because if you didn't deserve to be there, you wouldn't have been in that position in the first place," he said.
He also expressed sentiments over the level of what he described as harsh and unwarranted attacks on people in the industry by a section of the public.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show he took the opportunity to explain the inspiration behind his "Wish Me Well" song.
He intimated that prior to his appearance in the industry, he was believed that people would love him for his talent. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
"Before I entered the scene, I thought Ghanaians will love me because I'm talented. That is how I came into the industry as a 'Fadama Boy'. I didn't know it is that harsh and some people can sometimes attack you verbally,
"I thought that when you get to the Kuami Eugene Rockstar stage your people will love you...But I didn't know some people will take it as [their] occupation to attack you...Because this was new to me, that's why I wrote the song 'Wish Me Well'," he added.
Kuami Eugene has been the voice behind hit songs like 'Angela', 'Confusion', among others and is the latest to receive the enviable title of the 'Artiste of the Year' at 2020 edition of the VGMAs, after three years of being in the music industry.
