A communication team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo, has expressed shock at the opposition New Patriotic party’s (NPP) invitation to the Electoral Commission (EC) to supervise its internal elections.
According to him, he did not expect the party to seek the services of an institution it labeled as corrupt and incompetent after the 2012 general elections.
Fred Agbenyo made the comment during the discussion of the NPP’s just ended regional elections on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday.
The NPP after the 2012 election challenged the results in court, alleging that the EC rigged the election to favour President John Mahama. But after months of litigation, the court affirmed John Mahama’s election as president.
However, months after the Court verdict, the NPP engaged the services of the Commission to supervise its internal elections as per the political parties Act.
An astonished Fred Agbenyo therefore described the NPP as a “walking contradiction” on Ekosii Sen programme.
He maintained that after the public indictment and vilification of the EC, and its Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the NPP had no moral right to invite them.
Fred Agbenyo found it surprising how the NPP had the confidence to invite an institution [EC] it accused of not organizing a credible election to oversee its own internal contest, exposes the party’s hypocrisy and double standards.
“I thought after the insults the NPP hurled on the EC, it would set up its own electoral system, conduct and supervise its elections.
“How could they [NPP] have gone back to the same Dr. Afari Gyan, who they openly called a thief?”, he quizzed.
The NDC man commended Dr. Afari Gyan and the EC for being tolerant to advance multi party system in the country.
Fred Agbenyo said Ghanaians will be the best judges of the NPP’s hypocritical conduct.
