Some importers of used cars are calling for government to impose higher taxes older imported cars.
The import tax-rate for slightly used cars is currently higher than that of cars used for longer periods. The importers say this only encourages importation of older cars than relatively new ones.
Chief Executive of Erata Motors, Eddie Kusi Ankomah tells Joy Business a change in the current import duty regime for the used-car market will give consumers of second hand vehicles value for their money whilst reducing the number of old vehicles on the roads.
“If I’m bringing in a car that is lets say 9 year old the government would depreciate it by 50 percent. But you pay full duty for the same car model that is not that old. So there’s something wrong somewhere. We should rather encourage new cars paying lesser duties. For instance, Up to 5 years should pay less and beyond that you pay more. If they do that, every Ghanaian would get a well-conditioned car at reasonable and affordable prices” he noted.
