A letter intercepted by Joy News reveals Parliament notified the Executive about the proposal to construct a new and expanded legislative chamber.
The Speaker of Parliament disclosed that President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had agreed to attend a sod-cutting ceremony for the new chamber.
“The President, in principle, has actually agreed to come and cut the sod the moment we are ready. So you can see that there is a lot of goodwill for this project,” Prof Mike Oquaye had said at a media briefing on the project.
The letter sighted by Joy News corroborates the Speaker’s statement.
In that letter, signed by Prof Oquaye, President Akufo-Addo is invited to the sod-cutting ceremony which had been slated for the last week of June 2019.
“We request to have the honour of Your Excellency gracing the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour to cut the commencement sod.
“Mr President, we hope you will make time to honour Parliament with your presence,” the invitation letter said.
The controversial project has left many Ghanaians infuriated. With a planned protest on July 13, and an already trending #DropThatChamber campaign on social media platforms, the public has questioned why Parliament intends to embark on the project which is expected to cost millions of dollars.
