Police officers investigating the recent outbreak of market fires have revealed that two suspected arsonists are responsible for the fires that gutted both Kantamanto and Makola Number 2 markets. Goods worth thousands of Ghana Cedis were estimated to have been lost to the fires that gutted the Kantamanto market on Sunday May 5 and another at the Makola No.2 barely a month later. Five persons were arrested on suspicion of arson, but three of them were later released living the two suspects, Yakubu Tahiru, 28, and Fatau Ibrahim, 22, to prove their innocence. When the case was called on July 10, Carlos Adongo, lawyer for the two suspects mounted pressure on the Investigators to disclose the location the suspects are alleged to have caused the fire. The Investigators then mentioned the two markets. But Mr. Adongo strongly contested and questioned why that was not included on the charge sheet. The judge refused to grant the suspects bail and remanded the suspects for one more week. Their lawyer, Carlos Adongo, pleaded with the Court to grant them bail since the investigators have failed to establish any evidence that linked his clients to the market fires. He reminded the court that at the last adjourned date, the investigators claimed they needed more time to fine tune their investigations but have since failed to do so. Mr Adongo said he found it surprising that the investigators have adopted the habit of coming up with excuses in order to keep his clients in custody. The Court has warned the investigators to expedite actions to bring evidence against the suspects since they have exhausted their excuses. The case has been adjourned to 17th July.
