The Jasikan Circuit Court has remanded a 50-year-old driver and a 25-year-old Nigerian national on counts of conspiracy and trafficking of narcotics.
The convicts pleaded not guilty to the counts and were remanded into police custody to reappear on March 5, 2026.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Seth-Vincent Kpodo, prosecuting, told the Court presided over by Mr Lambert Y. Kerigah, that the complainants were Police Officers stationed at the Jasikan District Police Command.
He said convicts; Justice Nelson Amlado, aged 50, was a driver and resident of Kpando in the Volta region, while Olayele Yussuf, aged 25, is a Nigerian national from Oyo State but had no permanent place of abode in Ghana.
He said on February 13, 2026, the District Command had intelligence that a certain cargo truck would be travelling from Hohoe through Likpe and Jasikan enroute to Nkwanta between February 13 and February 15, 2026.
DSP Kpodo said surveillance was then mounted on the said route. On February 15, at about 0400 hours, the team intercepted a Benz cargo truck with registration number GS 3831-09, driven by Amlado, with Yussuf as an occupant, at Bodada.
He said the initial search disclosed an empty cargo; however, a thorough inspection revealed a newly constructed inner compartment.
DSP Kpodo said the truck was brought to the Jasikan police station, where a local welder was engaged to cut open the compartment in the presence of the convict,s where a total of 1,482 compressed parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp were found concealed in the truck.
He said the convicts were subsequently arrested and the exhibits were retained for investigation, adding that on February 16, all the parcels were transported to the Oti Regional Office of NACOB, Jasikan and tested in the presence of the convicts and other witnesses.
DSP Kpodo said a test report submitted proved that the substances tested positive for the presence of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), proving that the substances were indeed narcotics.
