A 19-year-old JHS graduate of Sefwi Bokazo, near Akontonbra in the Western Region, has been jailed for 96 months for stealing GH¢10,OOO belonging to a trader.
The accused, Solomon Adu Kweku Kaya, confessed to the crime and he was handed the sentence at the Bibiani Circuit Court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Ankama, to serve as a deterrent to like-minded members of society.
Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Raymond Ezuah, said the suspect was passing by the shop of the victim when he saw that the handbag of the shop owner containing money had been left on a table after she had closed the shop to urinate nearby.
He said Kaya, a resident of Sefwi Bokazo, and an ex-convict, took the bag and hurriedly took to his heels but was arrested after committing another crime at Ankotonbra in another district.
He said the victim was able to identify the convict when she was invited by the police at the Sefwi Wiawso District Police Command, where the trader had lodged the initial complaint.
The accused confessed to the crime and said GH¢6,400 of the amount he stole was still with him.
Mr Ankomah was left with no option but to slap the suspect with a 96 months' sentence with hard labour and warned the youth to channel their energies into productive ventures that would secure their future and the future of the country.
