A 16-year-old Junior High School (JHS) pupil, Yakubu David, has died after falling into a galamsey pit at Pramkuma near Akyem Takyiman in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region.
Yakubu’s tragic death occurred while he was being chased by security personnel armed with guns and cutlasses.
According to reports, Yakubu and his friends went to the galamsey site hoping to earn money.
Speaking to Adom News, one of Yakubu’s friends, James Abanga, said the security men accused Yakubu of stealing gold and chased him to retrieve it.
During the pursuit, Yakubu was allegedly beaten and pushed into the pit, causing his immediate death.
Yakubu Ayuba, the father of the deceased, acknowledged that pupils in the area often engage in galamsey activities to earn pocket money.
Following his son’s death, he is appealing for those responsible to be held accountable and brought to justice.
