Over 1,600 workers have been temporarily rendered jobless following the closure of the Akosombo Textiles Limited.
Staff of the company say notice of the closure has been posted at the company’s premises.
ATL, the largest among the few surviving companies in the textile industry, has seen some temporary closures in the past.
The closures have been blamed largely on the influx of cheap foreign textiles from China and other countries into Ghana.
Abraham Coomson of the Textiles, Garment and Leather Employees Union however tells Joy News the latest move by the company appears permanent.
Workers went to work on Saturday only to discover notices posted on notice boards and vehicles reading “Shut down until further notice.”
Management explains the company decided to shutdown because it has run short of raw cotton and some chemicals.
Mr Coomson described the incident as rather unfortunate, adding the management’s failure to indicate a specific date of resumption of work could trigger agitations at the factory.
