The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mahama Ayariga, is asking Sekou Nkrumah to keep his opinions about who a strong leader is to himself and concentrate on organising the youth to impact effectively on the country's development process. Dr Sekou Nkrumah, the Acting National Co-ordinator of the National Youth Council, has recently been questioning President Mills' leadership credentials. He said the President is not a strong leader and that his government has so far failed Ghanaians. The government on Tuesday dismissed Dr Nkrumah’s assertions, claiming it is on top of its game. Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Wednesday, Mahama Ayariga said he had difficulty understanding what Sekou meant when he talked about strong leadership because he [Ayariga] does not see any weakness in the president. He said the president, being tactical and accommodating, decides what leadership style to adopt. Mahama Ayariga explained that within the context of a constitutional arrangement, where the powers of the president are clearly defined with a multi-party democracy in which the two major political parties - NPP and NDC - are almost equally strong, what is needed is an accommodating government. He was surprised that Dr Nkrumah would “go this far in making such public pronouncement” when the government is undoubtedly working towards achieving its ‘Better Ghana Agenda’. The Deputy Minister insisted there is considerable progress in all sectors of the economy even in the face of the world economic crisis. According to him, the government has been great in areas such as stabilising the cedi, achieving low levels of inflation, providing free school uniforms and textbooks, securing one-time premium (NHIS) and improving the productive capacities people in the Agric sector. He believes Ghanaians understand and endorse the President’s leadership style and qualities, that was why Ghanaians voted for him to lead the country. However, Mr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia and a co-panelist on the programme, pointed out that the Mills-led government has failed to honour many of the promises set out in its manifesto – drastic reduction in utility prices, resourcing of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) with GH¢200 million, developing stadia in every district capital among others. He advised the government to refrain from insulting Ghanaians by saying economic statistics are moving towards single digits when people cannot afford to buy water.
