Two students from the College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) distinguished themselves at the maiden Tertiary Edition of the Gas Challenge, a prestigious national inter-tertiary quiz competition organised by the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGC) — Ghana's state agency responsible for coordinating all aspects of the gas value chain.

Emmanuel Ababio and Abena Owusua Yeboah were selected to represent KNUST at the competition, which tested contestants on advanced knowledge of natural gas processing, the gas value chain, health and safety in gas operations, and the economic dimensions of Ghana's gas industry. The two were chosen from among the University's engineering student body based on their exceptional command of gas and petroleum engineering subject matter.

KNUST first emerged as winners of the zonal competition, defeating rival universities to advance to the national grand finale held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Auditorium in Accra. Nine universities offering petroleum-related programmes across Ghana participated in the maiden edition, including the University of Ghana, the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), the University of Cape Coast, Takoradi Technical University, All Nations University, Regional Maritime University, and Ghana Communication Technology University, among others.

At the grand finale, which was attended by Dr. Ben K.D. Asante, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company, representatives from the Ministries of Energy, Education, and Information, and other senior officials from across Ghana's energy sector, KNUST delivered a commanding performance. The team led the competition through the first four of five rounds before ultimately finishing as 1st runner-up with 80 points, narrowly behind UMaT who scored 91 points. The University of Ghana placed third with 64 points.

In recognition of their outstanding performance, KNUST was awarded a cash prize of GH¢5,000.00, laptops for each contestant, a citation, and a plaque. The College of Engineering also issued Certificates of Appreciation to the contestants in recognition of their efforts and achievements at the national level.

The Gas Challenge was inaugurated in 2019 by the GNGC under the auspices of the Ministries of Energy, Education, and Information, and has since grown into one of Ghana's foremost academic competitions in the energy sector, fostering excellence and bridging the gap between academia and the gas industry.
