The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Maxwell Kofi Jumah has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s lack of foresight has worsened the sanitation challenges facing the country, a situation he believes has led to the outbreak of cholera in parts of the country.
Speaking to Citi FM on Monday, Mr. Jumah indicated that the government has failed at controlling the filth that has engulfed the country.
About 67 people have died of the disease since the outbreak late last year with 4000 others hospitalised nationwide in what the Ghana Health Service has described as an epidemic.
Deputy Health Minister, Rojo Mettle-Nunoo last week blamed the outbreak of the disease on the attitude and lifestyles of some Ghanaians as well as the early rains.
But Mr. Jumah is of the view that the present government has not done enough in ensuring a clean environment.
He said the previous administration collaborated well with “Zoomlion (waste management company) and to some extent our District Assemblies through the use of the Common Fund,” a case he said no longer exists.
“For the past two years there has been a trend. That trend has been a trend of neglect and mismanagement and misdirected policy and as a result the enthusiasm that we all had with the introduction of Zoomlion and all those things are gradually dying down,” Mr. Jumah claimed.
