Founder and leader of the United Renaissance Party is appalled by the salary increase demands by Members of Parliament. Kofi Wayo maintains such demands smack of insensitivity, and of people who have no fear of God in them. The MPs have made proposals to the Presidential Commission on Emoluments for an upward review of their salaries. But their demands have been rejected by the public who insists such demands are unwarranted, unsustainable. On Tuesday the MP for Shai Osu Doku, David Tetteh Asumeng broke ranks with his colleagues in Parliament and demanded a freeze in salary increases. He said until the standard of living of electorate is improved it will be improper for the MPs to seek hikes in salaries. His comments appear to have been endorsed, albeit in a more vitriolic fashion by the enigmatic politician Kofi Wayo who described the upward salary reviews as needless. “If you truly believe in God you will have love for your fellow human beings. This is to me the height of men’s cruelty to his fellow human being. This is the height of insensitivity to the plight of Ghanaian citizens,” he fired. In an interview with Joy News, Wayo argued that for the past 18 years under an uninterrupted democratic practice in Ghana, the MPs have done little to improve the lives of the people. He said the level of poverty and hardships pensioners are going through for years, makes nonsense of the demands being made by the MPs. “The Parliamentarians, have they changed our living standards? We have no water; we have no lights." “...Is it the time for MPs to demand a pay raise?” he quizzed. He said electorates do not force MPs to vie for position and therefore the MPs have no rights to be making such demands of the electorates. He challenged the MPs to make sacrifices for the paramount interest of the people. He would not countenance suggestions that MPs spend on school fees, funeral, outdoorings in their constituents, saying if the MPs have established some productive ventures for their constituents, they will fend for themselves without depending on the MPs.
