The Head of Communications at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party for questioning the propriety of the construction of two universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo Regions. Deputy Minority Leader Ambrose Dery at a meeting with members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy of the New Patriotic Party (TESCON) at the Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) accused the government of abandoning old projects and starting new ones. He wondered why government will invest funds in the construction of two new universities when existing ones, worst of which is the University for Development Studies (UDS) in the Upper East Region are in dire straits. President John Mills on Monday broke the ground for the construction of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region and will do same on Tuesday in the Brong Ahafo Region for the construction of the University of Energy and Natural Resources. “We want the Upper West and the Upper East which already have branches or faculties or departments of UDS to be developed into full blown universities. “This whole business of the NDC government leaving uncompleted jobs to start new ones does not make sense,” Dery queried. But speaking to Joy News the Head of Communications at the Presidency Koku Anyidoho said the utterances by Ambrose Dery is borne out of sour grapes, adding nothing done by President John Mills will please the NPP. "Nothing is going to excite these people about President Mills. I have said it time and again that if President Mills brings Jesus Christ down to Ghana, they will have cause to say that President Mills went up to the heavens and bribed Jesus Christ to come to Ghana" he stated. He said the construction of the universities is in fulfillment of major campaign promises made by the NDC during the 2008 elections. Asked how much it will cost and the source of funding for the construction of the universities the Head of Communications said the project is in phases and could take ten years to complete. The first phase, he said, will take about one-three years to complete and that will be funded with the GETFund. He chided the NPP for doing nothing to improve the infrastructure at the UDS having stayed in power for eight years, adding, “If the NDC had been in power between 2001 and 2008 the UDS will not have been in the state that it is in today.” Koku Anyidoho conceded however that the UDS is not in the best of shapes but said the government will not renege on its responsibility to improve infrastructure in all the public universities in the country. He said President John Mills is committed to the National Agenda and has proven in many ways his resolve to improve the conditions of Ghanaians.
