The National Executives of the New Patriotic Party are not in favour of a name change, Head of Communications for the party, Kweku Kwarteng has said.
His open declaration comes only days before the proposal for the name change will be subjected to scrutiny during the National Delegates Conference on Saturday.
Sections within the party have advocated for a new brand for the party and have proposed a name change as part of a tall list of amendments to the party’s constitution which will be considered during the national delegates’ conference.
It appears however, that party bigwigs are not in favour of the proposal. According to Kweku Kwarteng the suggestion did not come from the party hierarchy but was rather part of a proposal submitted for consideration.
He told Joy News’ Evans Mensah he will vote against the proposal if it comes during the conference.
His opinion was no different from Maxwell Kofi Jumah, MP for Asokwa, who argued succinctly that the name change was not necessary.
But the Asokwa MP also threatened to vote against several other proposals which he said has not been well discussed.
He cited the expansion of the Electoral College as one of those ‘half baked’ proposals.
On the contrary, Dr. Afriyie Akoto MP for Kwadaso said the expansion will inure to the benefit of the party.
He argued, if the proposal is considered, the foot soldiers, the ones on whose responsibility lie the burden of campaigning during elections will have a say in how the party’s flag-bearer and national executives are elected.
According to Kweku Kwarteng, National Executives are not expecting every single proposal put forward for consideration to be affirmed by delegates but said all the proposals will be thoroughly discussed and voted for accordingly.
