The leader of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Mr. Abraham Koomson has attributed problems facing the Volta Star Company, (formerly Juapong Textiles) to government's failure to carry out exhaustive feasibility.
The refurbished company was re-opened some three months ago, however the anticipated large scale production is yet to take off, leaving the company with what its managers say are test runs.
At full operations, the company was expected to engage several hundreds of youths either directly as factory hands or send many cotton farmers back to the land to feed the factory with raw material.
The limited operations has left the previously hopeful inhabitants of Juapong and surrounding towns with little to cheer about, and led by the chiefs, are calling for an immediate intervention.
But Mr. Koomson told Joy News an exhaustive audit should have been enough to tell the government that most textile producers in the country were importing their raw materials from China and that it would not make economic sense reopening the factory if the basics of ensuring cheaper sources locally were not tackled.
He has therefore asked government to consider supporting the company to reduce the cost of production.
