Chairperson of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), Ghana, Prof. Audrey Sitsofe Gadzekpo has lamented the less participation of women in Ghana’s politics, particularly in Parliament.
Speaking in a yet-to-be-aired interview on Personality Profile with Aisha Ibrahim, Prof. Gadzekpo said the lack of affirmative action by Ghana has resulted in Ghana’s Parliament being heavily dominated by men.
“This is what gender advocates have been pushing for at all times engaging all parties not just the NPP to take firm steps to increase the number of women in Parliament, because of the way our constitution is, if the women are not in Parliament, it becomes even more difficult to get them in ministerial position.
“There has been a long-term engagement but none of the parties have been able to speak to that. In reality that has not happened. The result we can see in our Parliament, the lopsided nature of our Parliament,” she said.

The former Dean of the School of Information and Communication Studies at the University of Ghana said until firm affirmative action is taken, the situation will not be any much better.
“I can guarantee you it is likely to remain that way if we do not take affirmative action.”
According to her, countries that have taken bold steps to enact affirmative action have witnessed positive results.
She advocated for Ghana to imitate such countries since affirmative action is not in perpetuity.
