As prices of goods continue to skyrocket, family heads are beginning to shirk the responsibility of bearing the cost of casket when a relative dies.
They are now exploring other alternatives that will make the cost of funerals bearable.
In the Ashanti Region, a family head of a bereaved shared his frustration on how price increment is taking a toll on his family.
“I will discuss with my family to adopt the Muslim method. We would get a metal coffin that can be reused whenever a family member dies because I bought one recently at GH¢1,200, but it is GH¢3,000 today," he lamented in an interview with Unique News.
When asked what the other alternative will be should his family reject his idea, he said, "then they will have to save about GH¢4,000 for the coffin before they die.
"But if you don’t have that money, we will use what we have for your burial.”
Last week, casket sellers and manufacturers increased their prices because of a hike in the price of raw materials.
The producers say they are frustrated over the high prices of significant materials like fillers, nails, pine, saw and fabrics to line coffins.
The extra expenditure on production is pushing the manufacturers to increase the prices of caskets in order to stay in business.
With inflation rising high, coupled with fuel and utility tariff increases, local businesses are on the brink of collapse.
