The Chartered Institute of Realtors (CIR) and the Chamber of Real Estate (CRE) last Friday introduced the Universal Village, a pioneering social housing project launched by notable dignitaries.
Some of the dignitaries include Maher Kheir, Ambassador of Lebanon to Ghana and Dr. Mark Nii Akwei Ankrah, social housing and regeneration consultant, along with several traditional leaders.
This ambitious initiative seeks to tackle Ghana’s housing deficit by providing affordable, sustainable homes.
At the CIR Summit 2024, industry leaders and experts gathered to celebrate this strategic solution to the country’s growing housing challenges.

The Universal Village project promises many housing options, from studio units to one- and two-bedroom homes, specifically targeting individuals living in unauthorized structures like kiosks, containers, and makeshift dwellings.
These dwellings often contribute to poor sanitation in urban areas, and this project seeks to offer a healthier alternative.

“We believe that everyone deserves a decent and affordable place to call home,” said Dr. Mark Ankrah.
To build 100,000 homes across various locations in Ghana, the project will also incorporate modern amenities, including green spaces, commercial centres, and community facilities such as schools, religious structures, and transportation hubs.
This initiative is a significant milestone in addressing the nation’s housing crisis.

“The launch of Universal Village is a testament to our commitment to social responsibility,” Dr. Ankrah emphasised.
The CIR and CRE, in partnership with advocacy groups, international development partners, and private investors, are the driving force behind this transformative housing model.

As the CIR and CRE spokesperson noted, “We are confident that this project will set a new standard for social housing development in the country.”
Beyond providing homes, the project is set to boost the economy by creating jobs in the construction sector and beyond, further contributing to Ghana’s sustainable urban development efforts.
