The UK and Ireland branch Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, (NDC), Horace Nii Ankrah says President Mills should be contested for the flag bearer position in the July 8 Congress of the party.
According to him that will authenticate the democratic values the NDC believes in.
Some members of the NDC have suggested that President Mills should be allowed to lead the party as the flag-bearer in the 2011 election without any competition with persons like former First Lady and the 1st Vice Chair of the party, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings coming under criticism for stating her intention to contest President Mills.
But Mr. Ankrah says allowing president Mills to stand unopposed will amount to contradiction of the party’s constitution.
He said President Mills has performed tremendously well since he assumed office in 2009, and may need another term to continue the Better Ghana Agenda but stated that that does not mean anybody who wants to contest the president must be prevented from doing so.
He admitted that although currently the NDC is bedeviled by problems, he is optimistic that the early congress will settle the squabbles in the party adding that even though there were arguments at the National Executive Committee meeting last week, it ended well and is a sign of a party willing to bury its differences.
