Lifeless bodies of small scale miners are beginning to emerge after rescue workers of the Dunkwa-on-Offin collapsed pit made some headway in pumping out water from the pit.
Joy FM’s Central Regional Correspondent Kweku Owusu Peprah told Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong Nkrumah that some six bodies can be seen still trapped in the mud as rescue workers attempt to dig with excavators.
The pit collapsed Sunday after water from a near-by river flooded it trapping the mine workers including women and children.
Several other bodies are believed to be buried even though no concrete figure has been confirmed.
The owner of the pit who is in police custody assisting with investigation puts the number of victims at not more than 18, but survivors of the Sunday disaster say the number is not less than 100.
Rescue workers, residents and family members of the miners who have surrounded the mining pit have given up hope of finding survivors.
They had hoped to retrieve at least the dead bodies of their beloved relatives to give them a befitting burial, but that too until Thursday had eluded them.
There is hope, now that six bodies have been sighted as rescue workers work tirelessly to retrieve those bodies and many others still trapped in the mud.
