Authorities at Lister Hospital, a private medical facility in Accra, have denied accusations of medical negligence at the hospital by a couple who lost their baby boy there.
The hospital will also not pay any compensation to the couple Elizabeth and Thomas Vaah who say they did not receive the required medical attention when Elizabeth went to deliver at Lister on the 8th of March.
Elizabeth claims there was no specialist immediately available to take her through labour process which took over 10 hours, insisting, the nurses did not know what they were doing.
However in a five-page statement, the board of Lister Hospital insists the woman received the needed attention.
The statement said a final postmortem showed the baby could not have survived because it had “Multiple Organ Haemorrhage” which was precipitated by ‘trauma’ of labour.
Lister hospital says it remains committed to maternal health care, adding that only four babies have been lost from nearly 1300 births over the past six years.
“Our Doctors continually work hard to excel and deal with medically challenging cases to the best of their human ability and thus cannot be termed as professionally incompetent.
"In all of these, we believe that Lister Hospital and its personnel have in no way been negligent and/or acted negligently and thus do not agree with any claim for compensation whatsoever,” the statement added.
“We will strive to ensure that our professionals are not characterized as professionally incompetent. We will continue in our pursuit to deliver the highest level of health care to our clients.”
