This Sunday's edition of JoyNews' The Law will examine two of Ghana's most consequential court decisions in recent weeks.

The Akonta Mining judgement, which saw NPP's Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment with hard labour, and the Court of Appeal's acquittal and discharge of former MASLOC Chief Executive Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.

The Akonta Mining case involved allegations that Wontumi and his company unlawfully assigned mineral rights and facilitated illegal mining operations without the required approvals. The Accra High Court convicted both Wontumi and Akonta Mining, a ruling that has ignited debate over the enforcement of Ghana's mining laws, environmental protection and criminal accountability in the fight against illegal mining.

The programme will also examine the Court of Appeal's decision to acquit and discharge Sedina Tamakloe Attionu after overturning her 10-year prison sentence for causing financial loss to the state and related offences. The appellate court held that the prosecution failed to prove its case to the required legal standard and identified flaws in the trial proceedings, a decision that has fuelled discussions on prosecutorial standards, corruption prosecutions and the evidentiary threshold required for criminal convictions.
