Local Government Minister Joseph Yieleh-Chireh has defended the Accra Mayor’s decision to continue with his decongestion exercise. There has been some ambiguity about the exercise in recent times, especially after reports that President Mills had ordered its suspension was challenged by the Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije.Even though the Mayor has since retracted comments that the President called him to apologise for the reports ordering him to stop decongestion, the Presidency has denied ever calling for a suspension in the first place. The Local Government Minister is urging the mayor to continue as long as he is not in breach of AMA bye-laws.“If we want the right things to be done and for law enforcement to continue as a way of our life, it’s rule of law,” he said.He said those who have been affected by the demolition exercise could go to court if they have “evidence that the way the AMA has carried out the exercise has infringed on the rights of people.”Mr Yieleh-Chireh also added that calls on the president to stop the demolitions are rather misplaced.Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
