Out of the 324 projects registered with the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) last year, only six were registered from the Central Region.
In fact, since 1994 only 104 out of the about 3,725 projects registered with the GIPC has been registered from the Central Region.
The GIPC has for this reason expressed worry over the low level of investor interest in the Central Region, and as such the Director of Research and Investment of the Council, Mr Kofi Antiri, has said the region must endeavour to develop projects that would change the socio-economic status of the people.
He indicated that the Central Region had attracted $4.66 million in investments into the region so far.
Mr Antiri was speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop at Cape Coast.
He said the GIPC was expecting many more people from the region to collaborate with the Central Regional Development Commission (CEDECOM) to develop viable project proposals for facilitation.
In an address read on his behalf, the Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, said the region needed viable projects to reduce the incidence of unemployment in the country.
Mr Sarpong said the region must step up its efforts at starting employable businesses using local raw materials to improve lives and livelihoods.
He further urged the stakeholders to work assidously in promoting businesses in the region and for such business opportunities to feature prominently on the GIPC calender of activities and initiatives.
Participants called for better collaboration between the assemblies for the identification of viable projects.
