President John Mahama will on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, cut the sod for the renovation of the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.

Poor management coupled with the lack of requisite policies to keep it operational, led to the collapse of the factory. After decades of failed promises to bring it back to life, the government secured a $35 million loan facility from India to revamp the collapsed factory.

Communications Minister, Dr. Edward Omane-Boamah said on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Friday, that the government was determined “to revamp that national asset so that we will be able to produce sugar in this country for consumption and also for other industrial use.”

“This obviously is good news for our country,” Dr. Omane-Boamah remarked.

“Which is why we call on every Ghanaian to support local production to stimulate local production [and] to create local market internally and then look for market elsewhere,” he said.

Otabil’s ‘sinking ship’ comment

Reacting to the call by Pastor Mensa Otabil for a decisive leadership to save a sinking economy, Dr. Omane-Boamah expressed confidence that the government was on track to saving the economy from slumping further.

The Head Pastor of the International Central Gospel Church was speaking Thursday at the Festival of Ideas 2014 in Accra.

But the Communications Minister said President John Mahama was not ignorant of the challenges facing the economy and has already begun taking decisive actions to dealing with them.

“We are confident that with the huge infrastructural projects that are ongoing…we think that the medium term prospect of the nation is very, very bright.”

According to him; “President John Mahama is certainly not sitting aloof and expecting that this ship will sink before he takes the needed bold and decisive actions. We call on every Ghanaian to support government.”

He rallied support from Ghanaians for policies being implemented because: “Ghana is the only country you can live in without a visa.”

“President Mahama is a Ghanaian [and] he wants Ghana to succeed and he’s taking the bold and decisive decisions to ensure that this structural transformational agenda comes into effect,” he added.
