President John Dramani Mahama is urging Ghanaians to have patience because he is just in his first gear and will be speeding up to fourth soon.
His declaration comes as the President confirmed that land is finally available for a key campaign promise - the construction of 50 Senior High Schools for improve access to education.
The President and an entourage including the Central Regional Minister travelled to Ofaakor in the Central Region to inspect a 200 acre land.
The Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong clarified earlier report that the occasion was a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the first of many buildings.
He said John Mahama was just visiting the land area and will be interacting with the chiefs and people of the area to rally support for the vision.
Under the project, each beneficiary community will have classroom blocks, an administration class room block, a library, a master’s bungalow and teachers' quarters.
One of the schools in each of the 10 regions will be developed into a sports college with a football field and other sports facilities. The 200 SHSs are captured in the National Democratic Congress (NDC ) manifesto as part of the priority projects to be executed within four years.
A total of 50 SHSs are to be put up every year to achieve the 200 SHSs by 2016. To facilitate the construction of the 200 community day SHS and other priority projects,President Mahama constituted a Task Force on Government Pnonty Projects early on this year.
The five-member task force has Mr Alban S.K. Bagbin. Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli West and former Minister of Health; Mr E.T. Mensah, MP for Ningo Prampram and former Minister of Water Resources. Works and Housing: and Mr Cletus Avoka, MP for Zebills and former Majority Leader in Parliament, as members.
During the December 2012 elections education took center stage in a rare public discussion on how to improve access to quality education.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Nana Akufo Addo promised to make SHS education free. His confer was fiercely contested by political opponents as unrealistic.
The governing NDC countered with an offer to build 200 new Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country, turn the Polytechnics into Technical Universities and establish a University in the Eastern Region. The only region left to have a public university.
The others are Dr Stephen Adiyiya, a Social Development Consultant who is the Co-ordinator with Mr P.V. Obeng. a Senior Advisor to the President as the Convener of the taskforce.
