President John Mahama has instructed the Board of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, (SADA) to terminate contracts it entered into with Asongtaba Cottage Industries.
A statement signed by Ben Dotsei Malor, Senior Communications Advisor and Presidential Spokesperson said the SADA Board must act in consultation with the Attorney-General in terminating the contracts.
SADA entered into a 47 million cedis guinea fowl and afforestation contract with Asongtaba Cottage Industries.
An amount of GH¢32 million was allocated for the tree planting project, while the Guinea fowl project cost GH¢15 million.
Several years after the contract was signed and the amount disbursed nothing concrete has been achieved.
The issue was raised on the floor of Parliament by a Minority Member last year after it emerged that all the seedlings bought and planted under the afforestation project had been burnt by wild fires.
Infrastructure for the Guinea fowl project is also yet to be concluded years after monies has been disbursed.
The issue became a subject of investigation by the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
However the president has instructed that the contracts be abrogated.
The president's directive "follows the submission of a report by the Minister responsible for Development Authorities, Dr. Ahmed Mustapha, regarding two SADA projects," the statement said.
According to the statement, while the presidency acknowledges the viability of the projects, the necessary systems had not been put in place before the contracts were signed.
The statement further requested the "SADA Board to hold consultations with the Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Local Government to work out a strategy for the proper implementation of the afforestation and tree growing project, on a decentralized basis."
