The former Sports Minister of Ghana who went to jail for causing financial loss to the State is back on the political stage hoping to go to parliament.
Mallam Issah says he wants to go to parliament, but he could only do so if the President grants him a Warrant of Presidential pardon.
Mallam Issah was speaking to Joy FM Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on the segment ‘Total Recall’ on Thursday 4th October, 2007.
He said if he is given the Presidential Warrant, he could stand as Member of Parliament in one of three constituencies. The constituencies are, Bawku Central, Zebilla and Offinso South where he owns a house.
Mallam Issah revealed that since he came out of prison after serving one year of the four-year jail term for causing financial loss to the state, he has petitioned the Attorney General’s office and the petition has been followed up by his lawyer, but no response has been forth coming.
Mallam Issah who was serving a four year jail term, was released from prison on presidential amnesty in July 2003. He was convicted for the loss of $46,000 on a trip to Sudan with the National team, the Black Stars.
Mallam Issah also said the law on causing financial loss to the state must not be repealed. He argued that if the NPP government does so, they will be seen as running away from their own shadows.
He insists on his innocence and believes that he was made a scapegoat because he did not belong to the NPP tradition.
The former Sports Minister, also felt that the Vice President Aliu Mahama, has let him down. According to him, he was expecting the Vice President to help him as a ‘northern brother’.
He also said he has not received much assistance from the Kufuor administration after his release from prison, citing numerous visits he has made to the Office of the President.
He told Kojo Oppong Nkrumah that, once the President asked him to prepare a business proposal so he could be assisted to set up business, ever since he submitted the proposal he has not had any response from the President.
In the meantime, he is waiting to receive presidential pardon so he could put on his political cap and get ready for parliament come December, 2008.
