The Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Papa Owusu Ankomah has announced that the Ministry intended to accelerate decentralization of management of education in the country this year. The Minister expressed the hope that the process would help improve upon education delivery and energise the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry to offer effective services. Papa Ankomah was addressing the staff of Wassa Amenfi East District Directorate of Education at Wassa Akropong, during a three-day duty tour of the Western Region. He said as part of the decentralisation exercise, there would be transfer of staff of the GES to areas where their services would be most needed, and asked those who would be affected by the shift not to interpret it as victimization. Papa Ankomah said the Ministry had established a committee to put in place a system to enable individual teachers to acquire vehicles and houses. He said the group would submit its recommendations on the acquisition of vehicles by the end of March 2007. The Minister said circuit supervisors would be provided with motorcycles to ensure effective supervising of teaching and learning in schools. Papa Ankomah said needy children who walk long distances to school in the rural areas would also be provided with bicycles to lessen their plight. Source GNA
