The Kornor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II has called on Government to review the mining laws of Ghana to enhance the quality of life of the people.Nene Sakite II made this appeal Friday at a colourful grand durbar of the chiefs and people of Manya Krobo in celebration of their annual Ngmayem Festival. The durbar was held at Krobo Odumase. The celebration is under the theme: “Managing our rich natural resources – a better approach to sustainable Development.”Nene Sakite II expressed regret at how under the existing mining laws, the farmer is displaced without regard to himself and the generation after him and pointed out that the current mining laws are too old and seem to benefit specific individuals more than government to the almost total neglect of the people. “Even the Traditional Council is also sidelined when it comes to giving out concessions to aspiring developers, we would not tolerate this anymore. The people of Manya Krobo would demand that granting of concessions must first begin at the Traditional Council level and not at the Ministries,” he stated. He called on government to fulfill its promise of providing pipe borne water in 18 communities in the Upper Manya District including Akateng and Asesewa since the people are crying for treated water. He also used the occasion to thank government for making the Manya Krobo District a Municipality, adding it will help improve their efforts towards national development.Eastern Regional Minister Dr. Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, who represented President John Evans Atta Mills as the Special Guest of Honour, congratulated the Chiefs and people of Manya Krobo on their celebration and reiterated government's commitment and support to enhancing the lives of the people in the area.He mentioned some of the developmental projects which government had taken note of and assured the people that all promises made to the people would be fulfilled.Dr Apea-Kubi however expressed his disappointment at the petty disputes gradually gaining roots in the area and asked that the chiefs come together to settle their differences in order to achieve the much needed peace for development. He later presented some crates of drinks and a sum of Two Thousand Cedis to support the Kornor Nene Sakite II Educational Endowment Fund.Chairperson of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Hon. Samia Nkrumah who launched the appeal for funds for the Fund wished the people of Krobo well in their celebration and donated GHS 1,000 on behalf of the CPP. Other government officials also made donations to support the Fund. The Ngmayem Festival is the annual traditional harvest and thanksgiving festival of the Krobo people. This year’s event was sponsored by Millicom Ghana Ltd, Vodafone, Fan Milk Ghana Ltd, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Everpure Ghana Ltd and had TV Africa, Rite FM and Adom FM as media partners.
