Ghana’s women’s 4x100m relay team ran the fastest time by a Ghanaian female team at an African Athletics Championship since 2000, after grabbing a bronze medal at the 19th edition of the Confederation of African Athletics Championship in Marrakech, Morocco.
Ghana’s quartet took third place in 44.06 behind winners Nigeria 43.56 and second placed Cote D'Ivoire 43.99.
Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Gemma Acheampong, Beatrice Gyaman and Janet Amponsah also ran the third fastest 4x100m time (44.06secs) by a Ghanaian relay team at an African Championship in the past 20 years.
The 1998 and 2000 relay teams run 43.89 secs and 43.99 respectively.
Having won a silver medal in a time of 44.35 at the 2012 African Championship in Benin, the relay team which included three surviving members, Janet, Flings and Beatrice, set out on their journey to claim the ultimate in Morocco.
Flings Owusu-Agyapong started for the team, with debutant Gemma Acheampong handing off to Beatrice Gyaman and Janet Amponsah running the anchor.
Flings's start was strong, comfortably keeping pace with Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire and Gemma Acheampong ran another impressive back straight as she did in the semi final, Beatrice Gyaman run a decent curve and Janet Amponsah finished off to grab third place.
Ghana has participated in eight editions of the African Championships since 2000 and the 4x100m quartet wrote their names into the history books as one of the best teams with their time.
Sprinter Flings Owusu-Agyapong reflected on the relay team’s achievement saying, “It felt good to win that medal, but more importantly it felt good to have run that time which is very close to qualifying for the world championships next year.”
