Deputy Commandant of the Military Academy and Training Schools, Brigadier-General Joe Sylvester Nkrumah, has urged military personnel who will be on duty at polling stations on December 7 to discharge their duties with professionalism diligence and confidence.
He said the Ghanaian military been privileged to see the ravages of war in other countries where it had helped to keep the peace and urged soldiers not to allow the country to slide along the lines of collapsed states.
"Ghana has come a long way to attain democracy and we cannot allow a few miscreants to erode our won freedom. We have an obligation to set the pace in Africa," he added.
Brigadier-General Nkrumah was speaking at an exercise aimed at preparing military personnel for the polls in December.
Two hundred and eighty men and officers from the First, Second, Fifth and 64 battalions of infantry, the 48 Engineers, 66 Artilery and Recce regiments were involved in the exercise.
They were taken through methods of overcoming obstacles, shooting at imaginary enemies, among other things.
Brigadier-General Nkrumah said: "For Ghana's tomorrow, we must give our today," and added that preparation towards the elections was very important as it would enable the military to carry out its obligation of assisting the security services.
The General Officer Commanding of the Southern Command, Brigadier-General Emmanuel Okyere, said the army had been rehearsing seriously for the December polls and warned all would-be miscreants to desist from creating trouble because they would be dealt with.
He said soldiers had been paid by Ghanaians to provide security for the nation and urged them to provide a conducive atmosphere for voters to cast their ballot.
He urged the voters not to be intimidated by the presence of the army at polling stations on December 7.
