President John Mills has cut the sod for work to begin on the upgrading of the Tamale General Hospital into a Teaching Hospital.
The upgrading will consist of equipping the hospital, building of a four-storey building and an emergency unit.
President Mills said the project is in fulfillment of the campaign pledge the NDC made whilst in opposition.
“During my campaign rounds I had the priviledge of visiting the Tamale General Hospital and I made a promise that should the people of Tamale give us the mandate, we would in return see to the rehabilitation of the Tamale General hospital.
“The people of Tamale gave us an overwhelming mandate for which we are most grateful and today we are here to fulfil our part of the bargain, namely to cut sod,” he said.
He was hopeful the hospital which will be completed in 2014 will go a long way to improve the healthcare delivery in the region.
He was full of praise for the residents of Tamale for reposing confidence in the government and pledged continuous support for the region.
Ludwik Hlordze, NDC Youth Organiser told Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng that the project will help in the training of medical students at the University of Development Studies.
“This project is very significant to the people of the Northern Region, Ghana in fulfilling the medical conditions of our people and making sure that we have healthy bodies that will help move the economy of this country forward.
“It is a major campaign promise that is being fulfilled today, he said, adding, sooner contracts for the Western corridor road will be awarded to contractors.
