The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has asked the electorate to critically examine their present conditions of living to position them to make informed choices during the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections.According to him, the electorate should not allow themselves to be hoodwinked by any political party but rather undertake a dispassionate examination of their living conditions to make a good judgment on which party should form the next government.Addressing an impressive gathering at Gomoa Akropong near Agona Swedru on Wednesday, as part of his tour of some of the constituencies in the Central Region, the NDC presidential candidate called on the electorate to vote massively for the party in the coming elections since it was fully committed to their social and economic progress.Prof. Mills, who was accompanied by leading functionaries of the party like Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe, Mr Ato Ahwoi, Mr Allotey Jacobs, Nii Lante Vanderpuye and others, told the ecstatic crowd that conditions of living had deteriorated under the administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).He said, the daily increases in the prices of goods and services despite the appreciation of prices of cocoa and gold on the world market, had caused deprivation among the broad masses of the people.The NDC flag bearer described as ironical the situation whereby the NPP before its assumption of office staged massive demonstrations throughout the country in protest against what it described as worsening economic conditions.“Today the same NPP government which said the price of petrol which stood at ¢6,400 in the year 2000 was exorbitant and for that registered their protest through demonstrations are now selling the same gallon of petrol for over ¢50, 000," he stated.He therefore called on the electorate to discern the hypocrisy of the NPP government and accordingly vote it out of power in the next poll.Prof. Mills explained that the high price of petrol had led to the spiraling of the prices of goods and services which had eroded the real income of the vast majority of Ghanaians.He said Ghanaians were groaning under the harsh economic policies of the NPP administration, a situation he said called for a change in the December general elections.The NDC flag bearer said the party had learnt its lessons and would introduce human-centered policies if it won power from the NPP in the next election.Prof. Mills thanked the people of the Central Region for the warm reception accorded him during his visits and enjoined them to translate such attitude into massive votes in the December poll.He urged those who had attained the voting age of 18 to register with the Electoral Commission (EC) when the Voters Register re-opened at the end of this month.This, Prof. Mills said, would enable them to vote for the NDC to form the next government of the country.Source: Daily Graphic
