The New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Dormaa West, Kwaku Agyemang Manu has asked the Atta Mills-led government to cede power, if the government is unable to steers the affairs of the nation.
According to Kwaku Agyemang Manu who is a former deputy Deputy Minister for Finance under the erstwhile NPP administration, the NDC government has failed in implementing the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), which has led to the strike action of doctors across the country.
Kwaku Agyemang Manu said these on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday in reaction to President Mills’ earlier statement that, “the NPP announced the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) but left no money to implement it” while calling on the striking doctors to exercise restraints.
The Ghana Medical Association has embarked on an industrial strike since last Saturday over delays in migrating doctors onto the SSSS.
Kwaku Agyemang Manu admitted that the NPP started the SSSS but did not finish with its implementation but added if there were problems with the implementation of the pay structure, the government should have stopped implementing it, instead of starting and turning round to blame the previous government when faced with problems.
He noted that no one forced the government to implement the SSSS, adding if the government has implemented the structure two years ago in some institutions, then the government has no choice than to implement it for Doctors.
He said the NDC government inherited oil coupled with gold price soaring on the world market and therefore asked the government to use the oil proceeds to develop the nation.
Mr. Agyemang Manu advised the government to invite executives of the GMA and put something on the table and appeal to the members to return to the hospitals.
However, the Communications Director at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho admitted that the SSSS is a novelty and definitely there will be problems with its implementation.
"This is the first time as a nation we are implementing this SSSS, are we saying with honesty that we will not come across hurdles we will jump over, are we saying we will not meet potholes on the road, so definitely there will be problems along the line," Koku Anyidoho stressed.
He therefore appealed to the doctors to return to the Hospitals and save lives.
He added the government cannot afford to go to bed on this strike action.
