The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo says the best tribute to the memory of President John Evans Atta Mills, is for Ghanaians to commit to peace before, during and after the December general elections. He observed that the late President affectionately called Asomdwe hene was an embodiment of modesty and peace, hence his demise should unite the entire nation. The mortal remains of the late John Mills has been laid in state at the State House to offer an opportunity to his family, colleagues, friends and well-wishers to bid their final farewell. The late President who died on 24 July at the 37 Military Hospital at age 68; will be buried on Friday August 10, 2012. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Samuel Ofosu- Ampofo urged politicians to let the modest and peaceful nature of the late President permeate their lives, than to seek their personal interest. According to him, the numerous accolades being showered on the late John Mills even in death attest to the fact that, “a good name is indeed better than riches”. The Local Government Minister indicated that the late Mills laid down his life for the nation even at the peril of his life and thus should be celebrated. “We must celebrate Mills and thank God for his life. When I filed passed his [Mills] body, I noticed that he is at peace with himself” he added. Ofosu-Ampofo proposed the setting up of a foundation in honour of the late President to offer the future generation an opportunity to study what he says is his [Mills] unprecedented leadership style. He said Professor Mills’ death has also brought sanity into the nation's politics and that if any political party engages in ‘dirty politics’ ahead of the December polls, discerning Ghanaians will vote against that party. “Ghanaians are very discerning so no one can throw dust into their eyes. Any political party which attempts to engage in politics of insult would be laughing at the wrong side of their mouth”. Ofosu-Ampofo was very optimistic that the better Ghana Agenda, now under the able leadership of President John Dramani Mahama will reach its logical conclusion.
