A 23-year old miner, who assaulted a police officer on duty at the Bibiani Charge Office, has been jailed for 48 months by a Circuit Court.
Yaw Tawiah faced additional charges of causing damage and threat of death. He admitted committing all the offences.
Police Chief Inspector Emma Abotsi told the court, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, that the convict lived with his mother at Jona, a suburb of Bibiani and worked as a small-scale miner.
Sometime in June, he demanded and forcibly took an amount of GH¢500.00 from his mother, Madam Abena Ago.
Barely two weeks later, he asked her for additional an GH¢200.00, which she declined, explaining to him that she had no money on her.
The prosecution said this angered Tawiah as he threatened to kill
her and set her house ablaze.
A report was made to the police and when they moved in to arrest him he managed to escape.
Police Chief Inspector Abotsi said on July 4, at about 0830 hours, the convict walked to the police station, introduced himself to the police corporal on duty and asked why the police should go looking for
him.
He did not accept the explanation of the officer and attacked him in the process. A detective inspector who went to the aid of his colleague had his uniform torn.
Tawiah also caused damage to an armoured gate at the station.
He was, however, overpowered and after investigations charged with the offence.
