Ms Hanna Tetteh, Minister of Trade and Industry (MOTI), on Friday inaugurated a six-member board that would have oversight responsibility for private sector businesses.
The board has Professor Kwesi Botchway, Chairman of the Ghana National Gas Company, as Chairman.
The other members are Mr Frank Adu, Managing Director (MD) of Cal Bank, Mr Terry Darko, MD of Mechanical Lloyd, Mrs Grace Amey-Obeng, MD of FC Group of Companies and Mrs Adelaide Ahwireng, who is the MD of Domod Aluminium.
Known as the Private Sector Development Strategy (PSDS) Board, it would also be responsible for the development of policies and strategies aimed at enhancing the sector.
Ms Tetteh urged the board to collaborate with Government in the implementation of policies for the private sector and also keep it on its toes as far as polices for the sector were concerned.
She appealed to them to let their rich experiences reflect in their work for the private sector.
Ms Tetteh noted that about 80 per cent of employed persons in the country were found in the private sector, hence the need to develop strategies and policies to develop it.
Dr Botchway commended Government for its concern for the private sector and for the confidence reposed in the members.
“The private sector everywhere is seen as the engine of growth of the national economy and all the needed attention must be given to it. We appreciate Government for showing such concern,” he said.
Dr Botchway noted that the private sector could not function effectively unless appropriate strategies were developed for it and implemented.
Nana Owusu-Afari, Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), praised the Ministry for fulfilling its promise to the private sector for the establishment of the Board and urged the members to live up to expectation.
