The Ga Traditional Council has joined calls for the release of three pro-government communicators jailed for making contemptuous comments against Supreme Court judges.
At a press conference Monday, the traditional authorities announced they will be signing a petition at Montie FM where a towering list of singatures of government appointees lies.
Notable individuals who have gone to sign the petition at the premises of Accra-based Radio Gold are Education minister Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang and her deputy Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Gender and Social Protection minister Nana Oye Lithur and Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit Valerie Sawyerr.
Tourism minister Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare and founder of Ghana Freedom Party Akua Donkor have also signed.
The feminine support for the convicted criminals has been especially criticised in some sections of social media.
Critics say women who are supporting calls for the release of men who attacked female judges smacks of hypocrisy.
Weeks ago, leading gender activists and female politicians had called on parliament to punish MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong for verbally attacking the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei.
But for the Chief Justice Georgina Wood no such support from women groups and gender activists has been heard.
Policy expert Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby has criticised ministers for signing the petition noting it is “unfortunate”.
Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby pointed out that “the idea that ministers and appointed government officials who do the president’s bidding, should rush off to sign a petition that seeks to allow him to interfere directly in the decisions of the judiciary is the most dangerous thing that has happened in the Fourth Republic”.
Zooming in on Nana Oye Lithur, the policy expert indicated that her position on the Montie petition is at the very least, bizarre.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby is confident that the President will ignore calls from his own appointees to pardon the convicted criminals.
“President Mahama is too much of a gentleman to be behind a petition that effectively gives him the excuse to act”, he said.
