More teenage boys in the Junior High School are becoming victims of sexual abuse. That’s according to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVSSU) of the Ghana Police Service. The unit says it discovered the alarming trend during its outreach programmes to sensitize the public on domestic violence. Many of these young boys and their families are reluctant to report such cases to the police, and according to the unit, this has serious implications for the health of these boys.Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU, DSP Freeman Tettey told Joy News’ Araba Koomson: “most of them at the JSS are being lured into sex…by adults in their own localities who are deceiving them.”This was during a workshop in Accra at the weekend.“Some of them are even paying them money to have sex with them…luring them into anal sex; we talk about sodomy. These are some of the cases that are coming to our attention,” he said.“Surely we go out there in the course of the sensitization, they tend to confide in us. So it’s not a report that they are making but we are taking it serious because we want to prevent it…it’s a matter of time. Complaints will start coming to us.“Some of these boys are actually in pampers, some of them are actually having problems with their genitals, especially the anus. It’s actually posing a health threat to them.”Mr Tettey expressed worry that too much attention is being given to the abuse of females to the neglect of males in the country.“The attention is always on the girl child being defiled but there is now a focus on the boy child who is being sexually abused. So we believe society needs to look at that,” he said.
