CITIHOPE International, an NGO based in the United States of America in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra on Wednesday presented 75 metric tons of shelf-stable pre-packed rice-soy-meal to the Ghana School Feeding Programme to reduce food insecurity in the country.
Dr Kwame Amoako-Tufour, Chairman of the Programme who received the consignment from the president of Rotary Club of Accra lauded the efforts of international organisations in the quest to fight mal-nutrition and hunger in Africa.
He said the donation was also as a result of a strategic partnership between Ghana, the US Alliance against Hunger, the Global Hunger Group and the Global Food Security.
Dr Amoako-Tuffour said the food would be donated to schools under the programme, orphanages, prisons, hospitals and the displaced children in the three northern regions adding; " Approximately 22,000 people are expected to benefit".
He said government would soon set up warehouses in the ten regions, which would be used to store surplus food for future needs.
Mr. Kofi Ofori, President of the Rotary Club of Accra said the Club had set up a committee to work closely with the secretariat in food supply and added that it would continue to support government's effort in meeting the needs of vulnerable groups in the society.
Mr. Alfred Osei, Food Aid Specialist at USAID thanked government for taking the burden to provide Ghanaian children with nutritious food, which would help in their total development.
He assured the secretariat that the donation would be sustained.Source: GNA
