The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Mr. Kofi Frimpong, has confirmed concerns by his Asokwa colleague, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, about demands from constituents for assistance which brings about a huge social and economic pressure.Kofi Jumah is reported to have indicated that funeral donations, school fees and other demands are draining resources of MPs.Mr. Frimpong says the situation is becoming so unbearable that MPs feel reluctant to frequently visit their constituencies. He observed that sometimes MPs are forced to go for bank over-drafts to fulfill such obligations because according to him, it will be used against them during election campaigns if they fail to meet the demands. In an interview with Nhyira FM, Mr. Frimpong said; “assuming a member of parliament attends a minimum of 10 funerals a week, he is likely to spend not less than 10 million cedis (GH¢1,000) and that is why I say it affects us. Sometimes our pockets are drained to fulfill all these social obligations”.He said people need not to begrudge any member of parliament for not attending funerals.Story by Naa Amerley Nortey/Nhyira FM/Kumasi
