Ghana’s leading telecommunications company, MTN, is donating ten (10) incubators and five (5) ventilators to selected health institutions across the country. The total value of the medical equipment is GH₵125, 000.00. MTN Ghana Foundation took the initiativefollowing stories in the media highlighting the lack of incubators and ventilators in some public hospitals.The donation is therefore aimedat providing incubators and ventilators toselected public hospitals which have a need for the facility toimprove the survival rate of premature babies. Robert Kuzoe, Ag. Corporate Service Executive of MTNexplained that, the statistic available for infant mortality was alarming andrequires public private partnership to help improve the situation. He said donating the essential equipment will relieve the anxiety of the health professionals and parents who have to care for pre-term babies. A total of 15 health institutions would benefit from this initiative. The selection of the fifteen beneficiary hospitals was done in consultation with the various regional health directorates. Ten hospitals would receive neonatal incubators whilst another five would also receive ventilators. The incubators would be presented to the following hospitals: Achimota Hospital, South Suntreso Hospital, Nandom District Hospital, Bawku West Hospital, Savelugu Municipal Hospital, Dunkwa on-Offin Hospital, Tarkwa Government Hospital, Krachi Hospital and Goaso Government Hospital. The beneficiary hospitals who will be receiving the ventilators include: Ridge hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Tema General Hospital, Sunyani Municipal Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. In line with this, MTN presented a neonatal incubator to the Achimota Hospital in Accra on 26th August 2013. Presenting the equipment to the Medical Superintendent of the Achimota Hospital, Mrs Rhoderlyn E. Mensah, Sustainability and Social Impart Manager of MTNnoted that, worldwide, preterm birth is the second cause of neonatal death and also ranks as the second common cause of mortality in children below the age of 5 years, claiming the lives of 1.1 million infants every year. It is for reason that, MTN as a good corporate organization took the initiative to support the healthinstitutions to help reduce the death rate of premature babies. She said, “It is our desire that these incubators and ventilators would help reduce infant mortalityrates and ultimately help in attaining the Millennium Development Goal four which is aimed at reducing the under-five mortality rate by 2015”. Receiving the item, the Medical Superintendent of the Achimota Hospital Dr Aglobitse said the donation of the incubator is timely and will be put to good use. He expressed the hospital’s appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation. MTN Ghana Foundation since its establishment in November2007has invested over GH13 million cedis in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.A total of 25 health projects have been undertaken across the country by the MTNFoundation. Some of the projects undertaken include the construction of a Theater and a lying in Ward at Fomena Health Centre, the construction of a 15-bed children’s ward at TwifoPraso Hospital and MaternityBlock for the EjisuGovernment Hospital.
