The rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain is generally considered to be the biggest in football.
From the start, the clubs were seen as representatives of two rival regions in Spain, Catalonia and Castile respectively as well as the two cities themselves.
As Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two biggest and most successful clubs in Spain, the rivalry impacts the league championship on an almost annual basis. The flashpoints of this rivalry are the twice-a-season clasicos which draw vast audiences from around the world. Real has won more La Liga (31) and Champion League titles (9) than Barca (19 league titles, 3 Champions League titles) but Barca has won more Spanish cups(25) compared to Madrid(17).
Barcelona, last season became the first club in Spanish history to win the Spanish Cup, the League and the Champions League in one season, a feat which rankled their fierce rivals. Barcelona won the league at a canter, beating Madrid home and away, in the process. The 6-2 mauling of Madrid received from the Catalonian giants in front of their own fans, coupled with the historic feat chalked by Barcelona has made Sunday’s El-Clasico, a match the latest class of Galacticos feel they must win.
The Galacticos, after much huffing and puffing this season, find themselves on top of La Liga going into this match. They visit the Nou Camp at a time when Barca are not playing particularly well and have a couple of players battling swine flu. But, swine-flu or not, the main stars of this showdown - Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka, Ibrahimovic and their supporting cast, will all come out with guns blazing, firing on all cylinders on Multi TV’s Joy Sports channel.
Multi-TV, in partnership with Cowbell and the Accra Shopping Mall, will set the car park of the Accra Shopping Mall ablaze for Ghanaian fans of Barca and Real, by beaming Multi TV’s live telecast of the El Clasico on the biggest outdoor screen in Ghana! This fun-packed event, supported by Joy FM, Adom FM and Asempa FM, sparks off the fever pitch expectation at 3:00pm, with an outdoor broadcast of Joy FM’s “Sports Arena”, live from the Accra Shopping Mall Car Park at 3:00pm as part of the build-up to match kick-off at 6:00pm.
The only thing Ghanaian Barca and Real fans agree to is the fact that this will be a super Sunday to remember! Well, can you begrudge them? After all, it’s the El Clasico, and it doesn’t get any bigger than that!
