Sheikh Ismail Saeed Adam, an Islamic Scholar has challenged Muslims to be tolerant with divergent views and not allow doctrinal differences to divide them. He said Islam stood for peace and as such Muslims should always work with unity of purpose for the effective propagation of the religion.Sheikh Adam made the call at the first annual symposium of the League of Sunni Groups in the Ashanti region in Kumasi on Sunday. The symposium was held on the theme, “Unity, The Hallmark of the 21st Century” and among others, sought to unite the splinter Sunni groups in the region under one umbrella for the growth of Islam.It was also to enable the groups to interact and brainstorm with the view to exploring avenues to curb the rising trend of indiscipline among the Muslim youth.The Islamic Scholar stated that even though there was bound to be differences in the interpretation of the Quran, “Muslims should not allow that development to disrupt the mission statement of the Islamic religion”.Sheikh Adam said it was about time that Muslims avoided confrontations which are sparked by doctrinal and sectarian differences and rather adhere to the tenets of the Quran in their endeavours for the improvement of their own lives.Sheikh Mohammed Abdul Salam, also an Islamic Scholar, said it was very commendable that in spite of the challenges it was facing the Islamic religion was one of the fastest growing religions in the world in recent times.Consequently, he charged well-meaning Muslims to do away with practices that tend to create misconceptions about the religion for the sustenance of the good image of Islam.Sheikh Salam further called on Muslims in the country to use Ghana’s 50th independence anniversary to foster intra-religious unity since achieving unity was an obligation in Islam.Source: GNA
